Commissioners
The Commissioners
are voted to a three year term by the active and lifetime
members of the Corps, To be eligible to run for
Commissioner, one must have previously served as either Chief of
Department or President for a minimum of 12 months. The
Commissioners are responsible to oversee all aspects of MVAC.
Whereas the Executive Board runs day to day calls and training,
the Board of Directors run the day to day aspects of the
corporation, the Board of Commissioners oversee these two Boards
as well as the membership as a whole. The aspects of the Board
of Commissioners are more focused on the long-term plans for the
department, and manage our new group of professional responders.
The current Board
of Commissioners elected to serve from January 2011 through
December 2013, consist of: Ex-Chief Joe Laino, Ex-Chief Neil
Velasco, and Ex-Chief Ed Rummel .
Joe Laino:

Joe joined
MVAC in 1986 and received his EMT certification in 1987. In 1988, he
obtained his EMT-CC certification and holds it to this date. Joe has
held many positions within MVAC including Trustee, Secretary,
Lieutenant, 3rd Assistant Chief, 2nd Assistant Chief and
Chief of Department. In addition to his positions within MVAC, he is
also a Past Chairman of the 1st Battalion Mutual Aid
Chiefs Association. 1n 1993, Joe began his work as a Skills
Coordinator at the
Nassau
County EMS
Academy. In 1996, he became
credentialed as a Certified Lab Instructor and in 1999 became
credentialed as a Certified Instructor Coordinator and BLS CPR
Instructor for the
Nassau
County EMS
Academy. To date, Joe has
trained approximately 1000 students from all over the Tri-State
area. He's lectured extensively on a wide variety of topics related
to EMS. Joe also sits on the Nassau County Regional EMS Council and
is the Chairman of the EMS Systems Committee. Departmental awards
include several Life Saving Awards, ALS Provider of the Year, Garden
City American Legion Medal of Merit, Excellent Duty Award, several
Pre-Hospital Save Awards, and 4 Unit Citations. Additionally, Joe
has also been awarded Honorable Mention for Nassau County Instructor
of the Year and the Chairman’s Award from the Nassau County Regional
EMS Council.
Ed Rummel:

Edward Rummel has been a member of the Mineola
Volunteer Ambulance Corps Inc. for the past 20 years. Ed started
with the organization as a New York State Certified Emergency
Technician. He became an Advanced Medical Technician in 1991. Over
the years , Ed has consistently been one of MVAC's top responders.
Ed served as Vice President in 1992, 3rd Assistant Chief in 1993,
2nd Assistant Chief in 1994, 1st assistant Chief in 1995 and Chief
of the department from 1996 to 1998. since then he has held the rank
of Chief 9 times. In addition to serving as a New York City Police
Officer since 1991. He became a New York City Police sergeant in
2001. Ed has also served as a member of the Albertson Fire
Department as a volunteer fireman since 1988. Ed displays the hard
work and dedication that makes our Volunteer Ambulance Corp unique.
Neil Velasco:

Neil Velasco has
been a member of Mineola volunteer ambulance corps inc. for 8 years
where he has been certified as a New York State Emergency Medical
Technician. Neil has held the position of Secretary in 2003, Captain
in 2004, 3rd assistant Chief in 2005,2nd assistant chief in 2006 and Chief of Operations in
2007. In 2008 Neil was MVAC's Safety Officer and is currently 1st
Assistant Chief for 2009. Neil is not only recognized for his hard
work and dedication at MVAC, but serves as a delegate for various firematic organizations throughout Nassau County. Neil has also been
a volunteer firefighter with Alberston Fire Company since 1999 and
is currently the Fire Company's President.
